What's your guitar's DNA?

Post by libratune »

Here is an interesting article about the development by Martin Guitars of a DNA-encoded "tag" to be implanted into their guitars for copyright protection: http://articles.mcall.com/2011-07-22/ne ... entication

They're not the first to put a, or this type of, tag in a production guitar, though...

I have a 2000 Martin D-15. It is the all mahogany one that looks like a fudgesicle. Wish I had the cash for a D-28. The rest of my guitars just have serial numbers and one has a Factory Order Number.

Interesting article.

WIth all these counterfeits of all kinds sourced in China, (and we see several reports of Ric knock-offs) you wonder why the U.S. Customs and Border Protection dosn't crack down on these slippery guitar exporters over there ? Or perhaps U.S. Customs is too busy chasing high-profile stuff like Guicci handbags and Yves St. Laurent clothing counterfeiters ?

I really don't think Boarders and Customs Officers are too worried about counterfeit guitars, I am sure they are more concerned with Illegal Aliens and Drug Cartels and bad guys that point rifles and pistols at them. I am sure they don't go to bed at night saying "Sure hope we can catch that counterfeit Rickenbacker gang". There are fakes of everything, guitars, purses, jewelry, cars, jeans, shoes, you name it someone has faked it and tried to sell it. Some women even fake orgasms. How long have we been trying to stop the illegal drug trade? Some will be caught, but it is just a drop in the bucket.
