They tend to sound like a half inflated balloon.......jps wrote:Plus, it could stand up by itself with a couple of helium balloons attached to it.weemac wrote:You could try an Ashbory, small cheap and big sounding!![]()

I have mine strung with the strings for the U-bass and it has less sustain than the Ashbory strings (if that is possible) but it plays better and by golly does it thump!

To get back on track here
, Jason, what sort of upright sound are you looking for? When I had my NS design CR4M I thought it sounded much like an electric bass, similar to my ZON, actually, more so than to an Jdog-house bass.

I'm getting my old 92 4003FL FG back soon, so I may just try to make something work with that.

Well, there is a one off Rickoustic somewhere...it has frets though.
Try finding on that fits you, and just do a conversion maybe. Or seize the day and go for an upright.

I have an upright. I'm just trying to avoid carrying it on the Metro.

Upright sound from a fretless Ric is not hard... solo the neck pickup and play over the end of the fingerboard. Don't even need the mute. It's pretty easy. Because Rics have a neck pickup so far back on the scale, I think they do this sound better than a lot of other basses.
This guy appears to be using both pickups with nylon strings and gets a pretty nice fretless sound, that reminds of an upright. If you want a "big" sound, solo that neck pickup, roll of some highs, and call it a day...
