Anyone ever replace these with maybe regular Standard tuners from rick or eleswhere. Also, I assume new holes will need to be drilled if I use tuners from rick. I saw a grover tuner online for the E and A string. I'm also left handed. Will this work for me in the D string poistion?

I have all 4 tuners from a Left-Handed '75 4001 that might be what you're looking for. They are the "Open Back" type and they look exactly like the ones within the Fourth picture that Jeff posted as examples.
I don't have the ferrules or the original screws though.

I think what jeff was saying is those open tuners will not fit correctly if your bass originally came with Grovers. Which mine did. The edges will spill over on some. Thanks anyway.

Just kidding, Jimmy...I do charge for this, as it's time-consuming and fiddly work. I use Loctited, countersunk stainless flathead Phillips machine screws, 2-56X 1/4" long.

This thread brings back memories... one of the Grovers on my '82 4001 exploded in the case on the way to a gig. Got to the gig and found out about it... had no backup bass at the time, had to go off and borrow a friends Precision as it was the only other bass in the neighbourhood!

I think the shop I took it to after the gig fixed it by pinning it as well. No trouble since.

Just wanted to update. I used Expoxy 3200 PSI (the kind you mix, Bought at Home Depot) to glue the failing grover tuners together. Glued it. Clamped it and let it sit for 24 hours. i actually did this to 2 of them because another was starting to pull apart. They have been holding solid with no movement at all for 2 months. I've actually changed the strings about 4 times trying different strings. And they both have seen allot of winding and tuning. They look as solid as they day I epoxied them. And i play out with this bass too. it doesnt just sit. Just want to post this because I'm sure others have had issues. I will post another update in a couple months. Some day I would like to get the permanent fix for them. I never had grovers on a rick before, when i recieved the rick off of ebay it popped the first day and I didnt like them. I have to say now they are great feeling tuners. Hold the bass in tune and are very comfortable.
