Ticket to Ride

This appears to be real live footage of the Beatles doing "Ticket to Ride" in 1965. No lip-synching here. One note of interest: George is playing one of his Gretsches rather than his Rick 12, but that signature intro still has plenty of brightness and chime.

When they played "Ticket" live throughout '65, George used his Gretsch Tennessean (or if that guitar had a broken string, then he'd switch to his Country Gent) for it mostly because he had to do Paul's lead guitar part that Macca recorded on his Epiphone Casino. With the strings George was using on his Ric, the heavy bending Paul was doing on the record would be impossible, so the Gretsch is the likely candidate. George appeared to be using Pyramid flatwounds for 12-strings, which I would think were 0.010 gauge.

The resolution isn't so hot on this picture, I know, but the strings on his Ric appear to have the silk-wrapped ends that the flats of time had:

Thanks so much for the insights, Jake. I never knew any of that stuff about Harrison. I was a little surprised when my 360/12 arrived with TI Flats and I saw the red silk string ends. They've sure got that unmistakable sound, though!

Hi Robert. The link you posted shows footage from the Ed Sullivan show and it is indeed live. You can buy a DVD with all the Beatles Sullivan performances and the quality is great (way better than the upload quality on this Youtube link).

When I was growing up, all we had was the live album "Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl," and the rest of the concert material was only available on bootleg. I had no idea there was that much extant live footage of the Fab Four. I'll be sure to check out that DVD.

Robert, I am sure you will not be disappointed if you buy the Sullivan DVD. This is it:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Historic-Sulli ... 386&sr=8-2

I suspect in TV company vaults around the world there will be a LOT of excellent quality master tapes of Beatles live/studio performances just waiting to be rediscovered. I am guessing the copyright holders (including the remaining Beatles and the Lennon/Harrison estates) have proactively prevented them from being reissued given the interest there must still be in this type of material.

When the Beatles Anthology TV series first aired I personally saw a lot of footage of live performances which I had never seen before. However, because of the editing of those performances within the Anthology documentary format, unfortunately most of them were in a truncated format or with irritating voice overs. It is a great pity that there was not some sort of bonus tape/disc included when the Anthology series was subsequently released on VHS/DVD which showed all the live footage separately with no voice overs and with the songs played in full.

As a comparison of how this type of thing can be done well, the recently issued "British Invasion" series of DVD's did a great job of producing documentaries on several artists/groups which included not only a documentary with short clips of live/studio performances but also a separate section of all those performances in full. The company which produced these DVDs (Reelin' in the Years Productions) did a great job trawling TV archives around the world for performance clips of good quality and which, in many cases, probably have not seen the light of day since their original '60's broadcast dates. This is the series I'm talking about:

http://www.reelinintheyears.com/britishinvasion/

If you like the artists featured on the discs I would thoroughly recommend them; they are the best quality music documentaries I have ever seen for '60's era artists.

It would be fantastic if a similar format DVD (or set of DVD's) could be produced for the Beatles but I suspect we will not see one for a long time, if ever, because of the clearance issues. However, I am hoping Martin Scorsese's new biopic on George will include some fresh Beatles live stuff - hopefully with their performances shown in full. I should also point out the Sullivan Beatles DVD does include all the songs performed on his show by the Beatles in full and exactly as they were originally broadcast (in fact the whole programmes are shown including all the other performers who featured on the same bill as the Beatles).

This is a repackaging of the original DVD issue I linked to. Very interesting that the Amazon UK price is cheaper (if converted into US$) than Amazon US.

It never used to be the case that you could buy DVD's cheaper in the UK than the US (especially discs like these which originated as US issues). I regularly used to buy DVD's from the US and pay the shipping to the UK and they still worked out significantly cheaper than you could buy in the UK. Looks like the big corporations are now gouging US consumers in a way that we Europeans have been used to for a long time....I guess that's globalisation for you!
