Epiphone SG

Post by jdogric12 »

Hi everyone. Has anyone here owned an Epi SG, the kind with full size chrome-faced humbuckers and four knobs? Thoughts? I have a shot at a kind of limited edition one and am wondering if it's worth it. Thanks, J

I mean, I can't really see it being worth anything as an investment just because they say it's "limited edition". At the end of the day it's an Epiphone, ya know? If you are actually interested in an SG I am selling a really, really cool one that Jeff Levenson converted from a Faded to a '64 Special for me and it's not much more then an Epi. It is crazy light and plays SO good. Jeff is the man.

I really have no interest in an SG... but this one was made for SXSW. It has SXSW inlaid in the fingerboard (upside down, unfortunately, unless you play it lefty), and the entire body's top is covered with a sponsor's brand. Current bid in this private auction is $220, ending around 9pm tonight EST. Looks like new ones are over $300, so might be worth it just in case it's worth anything one day, but that's a gamble. Apparently they made at least two instruments like this; the other is an ESP bass, which I've also seen in person. There may be others but I'm not sure.

I owned an Epi SG-400 for about 4 hours, LOL....

Picked one up during one MF's periodic sales a couple years back. I was really impressed with it--very nice feel to it, typical SG, a little top-heavy, but since I spend most of the time on my butt anyway this wasn't a major concern for me. Unfortunately, in my haste to plug it in and try it out, I failed to notice a hairline crack at the neck joint. So of course I wound up boxing it back up and sending it back. I was going to order another one, but a really good deal on a used Gibson SG Faded, so I opted for that one.

But the Epi did feel and sound very good, especially for the price.

If you've got the itch, they're on the 'bay all day for +/- $250. I've thought about picking one up and sending it off to Jeff for one of his "Fool" renderings...maybe when I get back to the States...and after I send him my Strat body and neck I already have for a Rocky.

Forgive me if you've seen this alrready, but this is my Epi LP Custom that I picked up for around $350 on a blowout sale. With Paul's guidance and help I converted it to replicate a Gibson, with re-shaped headstock and body, new binding and paint, added Vibrola TP and dyed fret board. I hated the color it came with, which was a milky, snotty clear coat over putrid canary yellow. :x It was a lot of work, but a fun project which I'm very happy with.

Thanks, everyone. And Mike, I thought you'd like that. :) It plays real sweet, too, with a re-fret and primo setup.

putrid canary? like a banana milkshake? like faded RIC white? I kinda like those yellowy whites.
