IMNSHO, Chicago's Cianide is the heaviest (and best) death metal band in the United States.... and have been around since the start of the genre. Traditional doom metallians The Gates of Slumber named themselves after one of their songs. Anyway, I just returned to Indy after seeing them in the homebase of Chicago last night and they totally killed. Bassist and vocalist Mike Perun plays a Rickenbacker Blackstar (I think) 4003 bass with the stock Hi-Gains and his tone is pretty heavy. Here are some clips; judge for yourself.
