Hello friends. So, just what instruments are we hearing on CFAS? Obviously Lennon has his Rick, but is George on the Futurama? And is Paul playing the first Hof? It can't be Stu's base upside down, can it? Nah...

Anyone?

I'm not sure I get it. Paul's playing a 4003? Umm...anyone able to tell me what George and Paul are playing here. I'm going w/ Futurama and Hofner Cavern Bass....

Michael: I would agree with you that George Harrison is in all likelihood using his Futurama on "Cry For A Shadow" recorded in the fall of 1960. I think the recording was made before Paul McCartney acquired his Hofner violin bass, however. Let the timeline begin!

By way of explanation, Dr. Who is a punster and hence the word play on the 4003 "Shadow" bass. In this department, he will never let us down or leave us flat.

You're obviously right about the violin bass...what could he be playing? Are we safe in assuming it's Paul playing bass? It can't be Stu's bass, can it?

I am not sure that it is Paul on bass. My take, (sorry Dr. Who) is that this recoding was several months after the Scotland May 1960 Tour with Johnny Gentle.

Interesting. Paul can't be playing guitar then...unless he's on John's old Hofner?? The solid 7 was a wreck by this point, no? I'm quite confused now. I wonder who the bassist is if it's not Paul. Someone from Sheridan's house band?

The recording date for "Cry For A Shadow" is June 22, 1961 recorded in Hamburg at Friedrich-Ebert Halle. Also recorded on this day was "My Bonnie", "The Saints", and "Why". Harrison used his Futurama Resonet on these sessions, and McCartney was the bassist at this time and was more than likely using the '61 Hofner bass.
