My Dad was a heck of a guitar player (acoustic, mostly flamenco style) and played right handed...

Did any of it rub off on you? The flamenco part.

Not really, oddly enough, I never really learned to play much on a guitar. Us kids weren't allowed to mess with his guitars except under his supervision, then I lost my Dad before I was in high school, don't really even know what became of his guitars...

I'm certain she sold them. Without my Dad, she had to go back to work and couldn't afford to take care of all us kids. I got shipped off to live with my grandparents a couple thousand miles away, never really thought about it until much later. Unfortunately, it's too late to ask her now as well.

But hey, enough about my life's story. Let's get back to lefty Ricks!

Nice one, fellow Walker! And nice breakdown of why Ricks are so beloved. Did you have to custom order that bass, or did you find it in a store somewhere?

Awww, there's my first choice username.

Nothing custom about this bass as I can tell. It just has some of the unique hallmarks of a '74 that I've read about in this forum. It came to me as an Ebay purchase quite a few years back (2002-3?). Cosmetically it was great and now feels and sounds fantastic. With the work recently done, it's like a new player.

As far as being left handed, in the limited context of this forum, it does suck. I no longer expect there to ever be anything hanging on the wall of any shop that is interesting. Southpaws get to test drive the latest specials straight outta Asia. Yup, sucks if you play bass.

1975 bought at 'We Buy Guitars' on 48th St off Broadway, NYC in 1978. Saw it in the window and immediately took the bus home across the river in Jersey to get the cash. I was 18 years old and asked an older and much more knowledgable guitarist who was my neighbor, "What bass would you prefer over any other?" - He said "Rickenbacker".....that sealed it.

(The amazing thing is that - about 1 year later - that guy (with an accomplice) broke into a garage I left it in (with my band's equipment) - and stole this Rick!.........It was recovered the next day by police detectives after I told them of my suspicion). The police were very motivated because the garage was owned by the town It was in and contained $15,000 in other 'government owned' musical equipment which was also taken).

I kept it in storage for about 20 of those 33 years.

Price $365.

And congrats on getting that bass back, by the way! Not always a happy ending for those whose gear is stolen.

I was always in question over whether it was Burgundy or Fireglo. Not 'flat' enough in color for Burgundy - but not 'light' enough for Fireglo. I'm still not certain after all these years. Maybe the paint tech was in training or experimenting?

How he did it or why he did it is without contention from me! Looks great. Maybe it's hard to tell from the photos. Is there any yellowish hue towards the center that would suggest Fireglo? Or is it just the reddish hue fading to a lighter shade?

I bumped up the brightness & contrast in the photos a bit. Looks predominantly red, more like a Burgundyglo than Fireglo.

Definitely no yellow, just a bit of the natural wood coming though in the center.

I applied the 'auto' color and level filters from Photoshop and I think the pics are very accurate.

I guess the company couldn't tell from the serial number since i imagine they don't keep/or release such records.

I suppose it doesn't matter much anyway!

Seems to be many widely different variations on Fireglo. More than any other Rick color. - see 'iamthebassman's Fireglo above.
