Welcome to the club. For all the sexy curves the bass has and the styling thought and art that went into it, the "double hump" stands out. All I know is my 2010 4003 has less depth to the neck and is 1/16'' narrower at the nut than my 2007 4003 so I wouldn't think we are talking about a compromise between the 4003 and the 4004 but simply a change (in my way of thinking an improvement) on the 4003 neck profile by slimming it down... I thought that when I got my 4003 DCM, again when I got my Blueburst Cii and yet again when I got my Fireglo Cii. They all get played and have seen gigs. I'm just as careful as I possibly can be. I was just telling someone last night. I usually bring my MINT CS to the Christmas Eve services. This Sunday, I thought, I'll bring my 78 4001 ATG just to get used to the scale again. I've been playing a 35" Scale bass for the past few months. That said, there are just some gigs where bringing my lovely rack of Ricks causes a few gulps every now and then. The worst was on stage with a beer firkin being opened up by our sledge hammer wielding mayor to celebrate the start of Philly Beer Week. I gave a him a look like "don't swing that thing anywhere near my stuff" and I think he got the message. We got away with just a beer splattered monitor from that whole escapade and that was all...whew!
