First Ed Sullivan appearance - 48 years ago today

Post by beatbyrd »

For me, this was a pivotal event that changed my life dramatically. There might be a few others around here that would say something similar. Beatlemania, yeah, yeah, yeah. Tom

Hey, Tom, good for you to remember!

In two more years, it will be 50 years since . . . kind of sobering, that "passage of time" thing.

Oh man......that's .......amazing. Yeah, I'd say that was a pretty significant event in my life. The other was the movie "A Hard Days' Night." I thought to myself "Now that looks like a good job...."

Please keep those old Beatle stories coming! I'd love to hear them all!
I was born in '67 so I missed out on what Beatlemania must have been like when it first hit.

Somewhat related, I just read this cool article about Please Please Me turning 49.

It's all of a sudden becoming quite alarming that events and happenings so important in our lives, are nearing the 50 y-o mark!
As a school kid in the 60's, a teenager in the 70's, it all seems not that long ago! But it's almost 50 years ago!
I took up guitar because i saw the Monkees on TV in '66, but it didnt take long to work out that The Beatles were the real deal.
What is that strange guitar John Lennon is playing?? It was stamped into my brain way back then. Took me another 40 years to get one!

My older sister made me watch (I was 10 at the time)..... I remember teasing her because the group on TV was singing about "LOVE".
But the next day in school?..... NOTHING was the same.... we'd all crossed some invisible barrier whether we knew it or not.

I had already started playing the guitar the summer before.... "WOW" I thought.... "I'm playing just like them!".... but I still couldn't
figure out why one of them played a guitar with only 4 strings.

Recommended viewing - "The Beatles' First U.S. Visit" DVD. It contains all 3 of their Ed Sullivan appearances and some documentary footage done during their visit, in the very early days of Beatlemania. I remember that the Monday morning after their first Sullivan show (on Sunday night), most of the kids in my junior high school stayed in the halls talking about the show, instead of going into the classrooms. That had never happened before.
