I saw Genesis on the "And then there were three" tour----front row.
I even got in while they were doing their sound check. No Peter or Steve, but they were Aweesome!!!!!
They had Daryl Stuermur(Sp?) and Chester Thompson with them. GREAT show!!!!!!!
I really like that album......the last one that I liked from them.

Let's not forget Invisible Touch, just brilliant

They have turned out some extraordinary music over the years and it is interesting to see how their style of music changed.jdogric12 wrote:Let's not forget Invisible Touch, just brilliant
It's a shame Mike didn't stick to playing a Ric though, I have played along on my 4001 to many of their later tracks that were recorded and in my opinion the Ric seems ideally (or even better) suited to whatever song they have produced.

I think this is your text right Ron?
So you mean the "Duke Suite." I have an old bootleg VHS of one of the Lyceum shows that tour. They do the whole Duke Suite straight through (BTL, Duchess, GV, TIOA, DT/DE).
It always cracks me up to see people write off Turn It On Again as a pop hit, as if it's not in 13/4 or part of the "prog medley," even if the concept is thin compared to something like Lamb or Supper's Ready.

And Then There Were Three could actually be my favourite Genesis studio album, but then it's the first I heard and so will always have a special place in my heart. I remember when I first heard it (I was about 14 or so), for some reason I thought they were from Holland.
Re: How long did Mike Rutherford play Ric basses in Genesis?
I was a fan for quite a while when ATTWT came out. We were all extremely interested to see how they would sound without Hackett. As was the case in those days, release dates were vague so we had to wait until the radio played something from the album. One day in college I was listening in my dorm room when the DJ announced a song ("Down and Out") from the album. As it began to play, I excitedly ran out the door to alert the other Genesis fans on the floor. Unfortunately I neglected to take my key with me and as the door closed I realized I was locked out. I could barely hear the track through the door. Eventually I got the R.A. on the floor to open my door just as the last bit of the song played. It was that marvelous, ascending keyboard coda. A day later I had the album and a few months later I saw the tour in Madison Square Garden. Fun times!henry5 wrote:And Then There Were Three could actually be my favourite Genesis studio album, but then it's the first I heard and so will always have a special place in my heart. My favorite Genesis is mid 70"s at the end of PG and later SH. Seconds out Live is Collins doing Gabrial as good as PG. but in his own style. awesome album Suuper's ready best version i have ever heard. then Trick Of the tail, Wind & weathering and Then there were three... Duke has some awesome tunes on it, as well as invisable touch but for me these are my personal favorites.

Genesis is a great example of "the evolving band" syndrome.
Listen to From Genesis to Revelations and you'll hear a very young band in their derivative (Bee Gees/The Free Design/folky) period.
Listen to Tresspass, Nursery Cryme and you'll hear the real personalities come out and the magic begins. Anthony Phillips influenced the band a lot.
Listen to Foxtrot and Selling England and you'll hear the band mature. Stunning stuff. Hackett shows his prowess and unique approach.
Listen to Selling England and The Lamb and you'll see each member pushing and growing. Peter is at his zenith and tends to overshadow on The Lamb.
Listen to post-Peter Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering and you'll see Phil blossom. All the members stretch their songwriting skills. Some great stuff!
Listen to And then... and Duke to see the newer, pop-influenced sound.
Listen to Abacab, Genesis, and Invisible Touch to hear the evolution of that sound and hear Phil take his place at the top of the pops.
Listen to We Can't Dance (well, YOU listen because I have a hard time listening to it!) to see the height of the pop-trend.
Listen to Calling All Stations to hear the post-Phil experiment (very underrated IMHO).
Listen to the reunion live CD to hear their take on the whole history. (It sounds like MONEY!)
What you have is the classic example of the growth of a dynamic band. No stagnation, just artists achieving their potential. When a successful band stays the same they make some people happy but disappoint other fans and (especially) critics. When a band or artist constantly changes they tend to alienate the core fans but please critics and gain new fans. Basically, the public is almost always unhappy no matter what course a band follows!
Genesis fans can be a very opinionated bunch. I try to find the positive in everything a group does. I prefer the classic line-up but I see value and fun in all of their efforts. After all, we wouldn't have all of the Anthony Phillips, Peter Gabriel, and Steve Hackett solo CDs if not for the evolution of the band. It is all good.
