All I have is a bad copy of circuit diagram of
the Conqueror/Defiant/Supreme Vox transistor amps
but it's worth if someone could try this:
such an amp, a SG, bridge pu, a Vox cabinet with Midas Horn speaker: take the Distortion Channel, full distortion setting, min. bass and max. treble setting, fiddling with that "resonance sound switch" .
Can you achieve the sound we are looking for?
Or some thinny fuzzy **** sound?
As far as I know the preamp section of the amps
the Beatles used in 1966 was close to
these Thomas/Vox amps.

Wolfgang: I won't be recruited by any Beatles' Tribute band anytime soon, however, here is my attempt at getting the sound. Casino, AC-30, Crispy Cream Treble Booster and Vox Valve Tone Pedal. Casino is on full treble using the bridge P90 setting, AC-30 on the brilliant channel full treble and a touch of bass, Valve Tone minimum distortion maximum treble tone and Treble Booster at half setting.

Wow, Peter - that pretty much nails it.
It's definitely the Casino huh? I couldn't get my SG sounding like that I don't think.
P90s all the way.
And I thought I had my Casino GAS under control.

hello Peter and Spencer,
let me bring up again this topic:
could it be Lennon played lead with his Casino
and George did the rhythm part (on SG or even his Casino, too)?
Why?: I think the rhythm part is not as easy as John used to play until 1968. He was a straight
strummer. But, not to be mistaken: I love his syncopated electic rhythm guitar playing.

George would have preferred his SG for the lead guitar part.

My guess for the amp used would be the hybrid 7120 amps. They had a tube power stage and a transistor preamp stage with a built in fuzz. I've heard you could get the best distortion sound by running the fuzz from one channel into another channel. That book on the Beatles gear mentions something about this I think. Those amps were used for Revolver and Sgt. Peppers, and you can hear the sound difference.
As far as which guitar was used....I have no idea, but the Casino or an SG wouldn't surpise me in the least.

I have often wondered about the lead tone on this one, rain, and paperback rider. To my mind it sounds like and SG thru some sort of early SS amp that would distort like some early impure transistors would.

The earlier sound bite though almost nailed the tone. Very close.
