A recently-discovered guitar, played by George Harrison and John Lennon during Beatles recording sessions, will go under the hammer at Christie's in New York.

The Gibson SG guitar, expected to fetch up to £270,000, will be among the largest ever auction of rock and entertainment memorabilia, being held next month. Also among the 400 lots is a union
agreement signed by the Beatles before their legendary performance on the Ed Sullivan show.

Harrison gave the Gibson electric guitar to Peter Ham of the rock band Badfinger in 1969 and upon Ham's death in 1974, the guitar was stored away for 28 years by John Ham, his brother. It was
rediscovered when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame contacted John in preparation for a Badfinger retrospective in 2002 and has been on loan to the Hall of Fame, in Ohio, for the past two years.
Harrison, who died in 2001, played the instrument from 1966-1969, and used it during the Revolver recording sessions. Lennon also played the guitar during the White Album sessions in 1969.
Also on sale are the 1964 applications to the American Federation of Television and Radio
Artists (AFTRA) signed by the Beatles before appearing on the Ed Sullivan show. The performance on the popular American show attracted one of the largest ever US television audiences. The documents are expected to sell for between £32,000 and £43,000.

Thanks for posting that Peter. That guitar has always held an interest to me. I wasn't aware though that John played it during the White Album sessions.

let's hope that it is on the up and up. I am always a tad cautious when I hear of new claims that something old of the Fab Four has been found.

This will beat the $400,000 that was gotton for Harrison's Telecaster (Let It Be sessions) that sold last year. The tele had all kind of change-outs. Olivia bought it, as she will buy this also.

Peter, I'm with you on this one. I'm very cautious on this. There is no invoice with a serial number match which would confirm it's authenticity. We've seen this happen before. George is no longer with us, the guitar surfaces after 28 years in mothballs(which is unbelievable to me), it sits at the RRHF for two years and goes up for auction. Show me the proof. There was/still is a lot of hard feelings between Apple and Badfinger. Tragic as it was the Ham brothers committed suicide over the crummy business deal they were handed. I guess I wouldn't blame John Ham for trying to raise some cash. But in the end we'll end up with another phoney Beatle guitar. I wouldn't be so sure Olivia will buy this one. The rosewood Tele was definitely real.

Certainly can't validate this guitar but if Harrison's SG was made in 1964 the serial number as described on the auction would match up...but it is only a guess that his SG was made in '64 from what I have read.
