Got the go ahead from my wife to use tax return for 4th Ric.
The Mrs. said she is cool with me using next years tax return on my 4th Ric bass..... So the question I have for you my brethren (and sistren)... is what to get since I have time to plan this next purchase. At this very moment I have three 4003's in FG, JG and MG. I think if I go new it would probably be a Ruby 4003 or a Fretless 4003 (which I know would not be as easy to score). But what I probably want the most is a re issue.... the V63 or V64.... what ever they are called. But then there is always an older Ric 4001 which would be really really cool but a little harder since I would want one in really minty condition. Suggest away...I need your input!

Since you have 3 new ones, it is time to try something different. A fretless would be tough to find, unless you give it time. Ruby 4003 would be a repeat of what you have. I love the old 70s 4001 basses, and being a used bass, would not be pristine, but the neck and tone is worth it for me. I have two in really decent shape considering they are 36 and 37 years old. Lastly, the V63s I have and the one I sold are fantastic basses, as are the C64 basses I've played at Confluences. More costly, but great basses.armybass wrote:The Mrs. said she is cool with me using next years tax return on my 4th Ric bass..... There is always a mid-60s RM.........

Since the tax returns won't arrive for several months, you have time to hunt the used (or new) Ric market for something special, like the examples John A has suggested.
And by the way, your spouse is very special !!

I would go for something different, a new 4004.

It depends........how nuch $ are you getting back??????
Personally, I would go for an older 4001. I currently own one, have had two, and LOVE them!!!!
There is a '73 4001 in Azureglo. in beautiful shape at Nationwideguitars.com
It's been sitting there waiting for someone for quite a while. I would LOVE to have it, but, it's right-handed.
You righties REALLY make me jealous!!!!
I would also reccomend a V63----they are great basses!!!!!!!!
Best of luck, and happy shopping!!!!

+1. Jeff beat me to it. A 4004 is different from your 4003's. The new ones are the same neck profile as your newer 4003's but the sound is different and opens up a bunch of new tonal possibilities. Ultimately, I would say a 4002 but unless your tax return is huge, that's not going to happen. You would have to find one first and that is no easy task. The 4002 is a tone beast!jps wrote:I would go for something different, a new 4004.

The '70s 4001 basses are fantastic, but if you haven't played a 4004, you really owe it to yourself to give one a try...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
Re: Got the go ahead from my wife to use tax return for 4th Ric.
I will jump on the 4004 bandwagon. I have a laredo and a cii,and there are some subtle differences in the tone each produces. I would say the Laredo is tonally a little more like the 4003,the cii has a bit more complex tone,(one i really like, too).
The hb1 pickups are fantastic. And As far as vintage pieces, how big is that tax return again?

Hmmmm, I really like the look of the 4004's a lot. But they are not me. I am a Classic Ric fan. I would like to find an old 4001 but like I said.... it would have to be in great shape and also be a Mapleglo or some kind of rare color. I saw a used Seafoam Green 4003 that was awesome. Also love the Autumnglo and the Ruby and Midnight too.....

Go for something vintage, many of the other recommendations can be had with less effort....just my opinion.
Say a nice 4001

Yeah...I would love a nice MG 4001 with binding or maybe a white 4001..... Tuxedo, Red? Hmmmmm
