I'll try replacing tone pots with 500k and the volumes with 250k pots.

My opinion is the two 250k pots are too small to run two volumes in parallel with two pickups as hot as the ones on a new 4003, whereas 500k is more than enough for the tone caps... in fact I would not be too worried if these values were swapped (and possibly try a smaller cap value). Dane probably disagrees with me about this. However I feel the volume pot is the more important of the two in determining the final sound (not all important, just more important) and using two 250ks results in the low value of 125k which I think will make things sound darker than they have to.

I think I'm going to try leaving the volume pots as-is and replacing the tone controls with 500k first... like I said before, the volume controls work "ok" right now... it's the operation of the tone cotrols that I'm most worried about.

Josh and Dane - if you want to test the theory about volume control loading, use 500k volume pots, measure the setting for around 180k, 250k, 330k, and 500k for both pots. Then play the bass changing the settings for BOTH volumes to the different values, and listen to what changes to the character of the sound. Remember to keep the amp's overall volume level the same or some of the difference could be the loudness of the signal.

Good idea John. It will all come down to a matter of taste in the end of course but that test is easy enough to do so I may give it a try some day soon.
