The new April 2013 Bassplayer magazine has a nice concert image on pages 14-15 of Metallica performing in Belgium in 1984 with Cliff Burton playing his heavily modified Ric (swapped out pickups).
Page 11 profiles a "2 Ric" owner in the "Dig my Rig" section, but I think there is a typo. Was there ever a late 70's 4001E model? It doesn't ring a bell. Maybe Paul can chime in. He notes that if his house was burning down, he gets the wife and kids out, then goes back for that Ric...
I don't often see Rics in bassplayer, so I thought that both were worth a mention.

there was a messerschmitt 109 E...but no 4001E ! lol.
