While his story may be real, I don't see what the difference is if they're from a 4001 or a steel.

They don't look like vintage shoes, they look more like V63 shoes.

gee ... they kinda look real to me ... but it is hard to tell with the bad photo ... but they probably have degaussed and may not take a magnetic charge again ...

They are old and if they are weak Jason Lollar can regauss them. The same magnets can be found the those $250 to $300 lap steels that keep popping up. If the price goes much above $200 it is probably not worth it.

I've seen guys that have taken those shoes, put a pickup in it and sell it as a better version of an original horseshoe pickup.

Ted, you see anyone do that?

I have not heard of anyone calling it a better version of the original but I am sure it has happened. I've done two up with 70's bobbins which may be better than the original in one or two respects. First, the original bobbins are made of a pliable material that shrinks over time and does not hold the mounting screws very well. Second, the 70's bobbins are hotter so the pickup is louder.

Actually, I said that when I auctioned one off.

My feeling is that the original shoes and the reissue pickup inside make an awesome combination.

Have we determined that these are in fact real vintage shoes? Why would he have removed these from that bass? The pickup couldn't work without them. They still look more like reliced V63 shoes as they look thicker than any vintage ones I have seen.

I'd bet they're removed from a steel. There's no way to know. Either way the shoes would be interchangeable as long as they're of the 1 1/4" variety.

I took a shot at them but did not want to go much above $200. The buyer is the same guy who bought my first project horseshoe pickup. He also bought that black early 60's 4000 that floated through Ebay a few months ago. He seems to be very fond of 60's Ricks.
