Somewhere back in the archives we had discussed the fact that Geddy had a 3001. I don't believe that he ever played it live, but this is a backstage shot of him noodling around on it during the Farewell To Kings tour. I had searched & searched for this pic & couldn't find it in my computer, but Jeff Rath provided a link to a Rush site in another thread & voila! I found the pic again.
Pretty cool for all of us 3001 owners for sure & very cool for everyone else to look at the arsenal of guitars surrounding him in this shot.
Sorry for the size of the pic - it's the only way I can get 'em to fit.
Maybe when the forum moves uploading pics will be easier!
I noticed that one too, Chris. Had never seen him with one before, I dont think it ever made it to the stage, at least not in any pictures I have seen. What the heck is that white one?
"They make great f***'n basses". - Lemmy, NAMM 2009
Geddy used a 3001 as back up to his 4001's during early tours and used them during soundchecks. The picture was published in the 77/78 a farewell to kings tour programme. The white one is a customised Fender Precision cut down to the shape of a tear drop with a added pick-up and stereo wiring.
Steve: My comment was wrongly worded, Ged used to "warm-up" with the 3001 not sound check.
Chris: Ged's first bass was a Hagstrom, which he traded in '69 for a new Fender Precision (alder body, maple neck, rose wood fret board) this bass was used soley for the recording of the first album and Pt1 of the '74 tour, Pt 2 of the tour (with Neil Peart joining) Ged also added a '72 Jetglo 4001. The Jetglo 4001 was then used on the recording of Fly by Night in '75, a white 4001 was used in the Fly by Night videos. The precision was used a little. For the Fly by Night tour ('75), Caress of Steel album and tour ('75) and 2112 album and tour ('76-'77) Ged used the Precision a little until late '75 when it was remodeled into a tear drop shape and had a Jazz bass treble pick-up added. It was used for a little of the recording of All the Worlds a Stage. By 76-77 Ged's touring basses included Fender tear drop Precision, Jetglo 4001, white 4001 (both now with bad *** bridges) a white 4080, a Jetglo 4080/12, a Mapleglo 4002 with Black trim and a 3001 in either fireglo or walnut. A farewell to kings was recorded with the Jetglo 4001 and 4080/12 on Xanadu. On the tours of '77 and '78 only the Jetglo 4001, 4080, 4080/12 and a new black Fender Precision where used. The 4080's weren't used during the Hemispheres recording, but the previous gear from the '77/'78 continued on the tours of '78 and '79. The Permanent Waves recording saw the 4001JG present with a recently purchased '72 black Fender Jazz bass. The 1980 Waves tour continued with the same tour gear. The fender Jazz was the only bass used on the Moving Pictures recording, the 4001 was used on the Tom Swayer video. The tours of '81 and early '82 Ged used the Jazz, 4001JG 4080, 4080/12. The Signals album of '82 was recorded using the 4001JG, the 4002 on one track, and the Jazz on two tracks. During the '82-'83 tour, the 4001's and Jazz were used with a Steinberger L2 used late on. The L2 was the only bass on Grace under pressure, with the 4001 used on videos. The tours of '84 and '85 saw only the L2 and 4001's hit the road. This was the last tour Ged used the 4001's. Power Windows album and tour '85-'86 saw the L2 used and a Wal Pro II. Hold your Fire album & tour, Presto album and tour, Roll the Bones album and tour all used L2 and Wal basses.
The Counterparts album of '93 was recorded on the '72 Jazz, and 3 new '93 Fender Jazz were used on the tour of '94, this format of using the '72 Jazz to record and the '93 Jazz to tour has continued up to this years Feedback album and 30th Anniversary tour.
Ged used the '72 Jazz on his solo album, he also played many of the guitar parts on a Les Paul Jnr and Gibson 335.
Ged currently owns his original 4001's, his 4002, and an early 60's Ric 4000 (collectors piece) His 3001 was given to one of the road crew as a present in the ealy 80's, both of the 4080's have also been given away as gifts. I know the owner of one of these.
Geddy used the Ric for some of moving pictures ... he said so in an interview ... he said Tom Saywer was all jazz bass but Red Barchetta was all Rickenbacker ...
I gotta chime in with Rath about one thing though.
I've heard over the years from various sources that much/all of Moving Pictures was recorded with the Jazz Bass. But man, maybe it's my Rick loyalty - but some of that record just SOUNDS like the Rick! I may be wrong, but yeah...Barchetta? Sounds like a Rick to me.
Though, I've been wrong before...ask my first wife.
Scott: Ged used the 4002 on Losing it from Signals.
Jeff/Chris: You know when I hear Moving Pics I'd have to agree that the 4001 was used for more than one number, but the great man himself has stated on several occasions that the Jazz was his only instrument on MP. However I have pictures of the band recording MP and the 4001 is set up in the background, no reason to say it didn't chip in somewhere or get used on overdubs.
