rattling and harmonic

Post by bbmaster123 »

Whenever I pluck the open D string on my 4003, There is a rattling coming from somewhere in the bridge if hit hard enough, the other strings are fine, and the D is also fine when fretted. also, there is a fairly loud harmonic which I have determined to be a B when I hit the open D at any velocity, and it is distracting at times. has anyone had this issue before? I'm using Thomastik flatwounds if that makes any sort of difference.

"Fine when fretted" usually means the nut or string angle over the nut is to blame.

The audible harmonic is weird... it may be sympathetic vibration from a truss rod (B is around where they usually vibrate to cause a dead spot). I would address the nut first (it really can't be the bridge or saddle if fretted notes are okay), then see if this harmonic clears up. If not I'd take the truss rods out for inspection or change the strings. If you contact TI they may replace your D.

Exactly! Fix the open D nut issue first, then see if the harmonic is fixed as well. Simple test: Place a small piece of paper in the D nut slot under the string. That will probably fix the rattle. Then you know it's either the slot or string. Most likely the string, or the nut slot is a hair too wide for that string.
