Another 660/12TP question??

Post by moleng1 »

So............... I've been reading up on this guitar, as I love the thing, but in conversation with members and in reading as much as I can, there seems to be a discrepancy on the PUP's in the 660/12TP??

Half the post I read say that the PUP's in the TP are normal 7.4 K toasters, but others say it came with the hot 12 k toasters??

Does anyone here have a definitive answer to this question?? I've never heard a set of 12 K's but my understanding is you can drive them to distortion better and they're not as muddy when pushed??

Thanks all.........................

Scatterwound toasters came out in '99, IIRC, well after the Tom Petty signature run.

Pickups are either easy to distort or lack muddiness, but usually not both. Without having heard them in person, I'd think the 12K toasters would be less muddy than Hi-Gains but more muddy than 7.5K scatterwounds.

The TP currently listed on eBay has Phillips head screws in the pickups. That would make them 12Ks, provided nobody unwound them.

My opinion (which seems to be widely shared) is that 12-strings should have the newer stagger-wound toasters. I've had a 360/12v64 for years which came with the 12Ks. I thought it sounded great as my frame of reference was only relative to a 360/12 with high-gains. After buying a 660/12 earlier this year, I immediately bought stagger-wounds and put them in the 360/12v64. Dramatically different in chime on a 12-string. The hot ones went into bridge slots on two 6-strings.

The good news is that should you buy new toasters you should have no problem selling the 12Ks, provided nobody unwound them, possibly for a little more than you pay for the new ones. Many prefer these in 6-strings, but opinion is somewhat divided. I like them, and this has reminded me that I should probably bump my WTB post for hot toasters.... :D
