Yes, I think you are right .... that certainly sounds like a Rickenbacker 12-string to me. Pretty cool 8)
Not an instrument I would normally associate with Lou Reed or the Velvets.

I believe it was a defretted Gretsch with a strange tuning that he used to use quite often. He had a name for the tuning but I can't quite remember it.

“Ostrich” tuning. All strings tuned to the same pitch.
