4003 truss rod help

Post by ficelles »

I recently picked up an old ('89) 4003 Jetglo. All good except when I come to adjust the truss rod the key won't fit as there's not enough room under the truss rod nuts :( Examination has me wondering if this a refin and maybe paint accumulation has closed the gap as there is some overspray on the metal bar. I'm sure I can deepen the pocket safely but advice opinions from the photos would be welcome...

You are going to need a thin walled nut driver or socket in order to get a purchase on those truss rod nuts. Removing any wood from the cavity is a bad idea.

If you have not adjusted a Rickenbacker truss rod before, you should search this forum for specific instructions on adjusting Rickenbacker truss rods. It is a different procedure than most other manufacturers. Damage can occur if not done correctly.

I have a tool which works for my '05 4003 but won't fit this one. You're right about not removing any wood, that would be tempting fate. I'll find something that will fit I'm sure.

I bought the Ric driver and had someone thin the walls so it fits under. Having said that, on occasion I’ve taken the easy route and gone to a pro.

Update - I removed enough of what turned out to be a thick layer of paint at the bottom of the truss rod cavity, the tool I use on my '05 4003 now fits.

I have a long-shank multi-bit screwdriver that works really well as the whole shaft is thin, similar to this one (it's the perfect size for the truss rod nuts).

I wish I'd thought of that :)
