4003 truss rod help
I recently picked up an old ('89) 4003 Jetglo. All good except when I come to adjust the truss rod the key won't fit as there's not enough room under the truss rod nuts
Examination has me wondering if this a refin and maybe paint accumulation has closed the gap as there is some overspray on the metal bar. I'm sure I can deepen the pocket safely but advice opinions from the photos would be welcome...

Re: 4003 truss rod help
You are going to need a thin walled nut driver or socket in order to get a purchase on those truss rod nuts. Removing any wood from the cavity is a bad idea.
If you have not adjusted a Rickenbacker truss rod before, you should search this forum for specific instructions on adjusting Rickenbacker truss rods. It is a different procedure than most other manufacturers. Damage can occur if not done correctly.

Re: 4003 truss rod help
I have a tool which works for my '05 4003 but won't fit this one. You're right about not removing any wood, that would be tempting fate. I'll find something that will fit I'm sure.
Re: 4003 truss rod help
I bought the Ric driver and had someone thin the walls so it fits under. Having said that, on occasion I’ve taken the easy route and gone to a pro.
Re: 4003 truss rod help
Update - I removed enough of what turned out to be a thick layer of paint at the bottom of the truss rod cavity, the tool I use on my '05 4003 now fits.
Re: 4003 truss rod help
I have a long-shank multi-bit screwdriver that works really well as the whole shaft is thin, similar to this one (it's the perfect size for the truss rod nuts).
Re: 4003 truss rod help
I wish I'd thought of that
