McCartney and Squire's Ricks

Post by levykev »

Having heard two accounts of how, where, and when McCartney's Rick was re-finished or 'sanded down'......It gave me the idea that if he had had it done in Soho in the late sixties, that the same gentleman who provided that service also refinished Chris Squire's bass??? They both take place within a few years of each other. Just a guess.....anyone know???

O.K. - I have heard other accounts of him bringing somewhere to be done professionally. But, you would know, thanks.

Just a pipe dream, I guess.

After working on his bass first hand ,and seeing the 'quality' or rather the lack of woodworking /finishing skills that went into the stripping of it ...I have to say that if a shop did this kind of work ...most people would have a YELL-Fest!
There are scraper marks everywhere -face ,sides, back, the cutaways ...everywhere!
The sanding that was done was cross grain ,and every direction .
This was not done by someone with a backround in woodworking.

Whether Paul actually did it or not I don't know .BUT...someone in the Beatles inner circle most likely did .I would include Mal Evans in this .
So you too want yours "ALAPWOB"?!?!

The only person beside Paul that could conceivably have done it is John Hamel. But I could swear Paul told me he had done it, and that was said in front of John.

Today, this instrument is quite smooth and the only thing that looks odd is that it seems a bit gray or dingy from use.

The C Series replica of this has a light, matte sealer coat to give the same appearance but will resist this discoloration and allow cleaning.
