This bass was quite a mess at this time. It looks like he took the Red Rose Speedway sticker off with his fingernails. I love this poster. For those who have trouble believing he wouldn't refinish his Hofner...look at this thing.

After he "re-finished" it, and then sanded it down, wasn't it just bare, sweat-filled wood? I remember reading Mark A. and Dale saying that when it was brought in for service, it was just a nasty piece of wood.

Brian, he didn't have the Hofner refinished, did he? I saw him 3 times on the last tour (the first time in 3rd row) and it looked nicely checked and worn, didn't look like any kind of refinish to me...

I've read somewhere that the Hofner was refinished at least twice, but I'm not a Hofner (or a Macca) expert.

There was a suggestion that the Hofner may have been refinshed way back, though no certainty...

The set list from some show, I forget which, was taped to the side of the body until just recently. No?

Right! It was from the last series of Beatles shows c.mid 1966. The set list wasn't on the bass when I saw him. Apparently the set list was still attached in 1998.

When he comes around in November or so of this year I hope he busts out with the 4001. That would be sweet!!

The set list is gone. It appears to have been removed by at least 1997. That is when the documentary "The World Tonight" was released. So I'd be willing to bet that it was filmed in 1995/96. The set list is gone, but you can see where the tape was. On the 2002 tour it appears the bass may have received a clearcoat. The tape mark is clean and the bass itself looks very clean. I don't think it was sanded out and refinished...I think it just received a clearcoat. This is just a guess on my part. I have no special knowledge.

I don't think the 4001 even comes with him anymore. He uses his Hofner and brings the WAL 5 string along as a backup. Too bad! I'd love to see him play the RIC.

I posted some pix of Paul and his RIC earlier this week. For those of you that didn't see them, here is the link
