I used to love Gibson basses in the old days. Give me a Ripper or an EB3 and I'll be a happy camper in a rickless world.

And even though the promo photo looks a bit horrific, the gent in the Gibson Ripper add seems to be enjoying himself quite a bit, all things considered.

The Fender Roscoe Beck sig is a great sounding passive bass. Here's the one I had back in about '04. Mine had a funky neck, and I could never get the action quite low enough, so it had to go.

Lots of regret for getting rid of it. I'd pick up another in a minute if the cash flow would allow.

Just to clarify a point made earlier in this thread. Perception aside, there are in fact only 5 moderators for the entire board and they perform the lions share of the work. In addition there is Peter (Admin), Gil (Technical Admin) and of course myself (Global Moderator).

We do our best not to intrude on your posts and when we make comments they usually are focused on the topic of interest, since we also like to participate in threads as members of the forum. My Larrivée is not a parlor, it is Jean's original L body shape. It is a cross between a classical and OM body style, sort of, considerably larger than a parlor, and the neck joins the body at the 14th fret, unlike a parlor guitar's 12th fret join.

BTW, I bought it used, I couldn't afford it if it were new. Even used Rick acoustic guitars cost waaaayyyyy more than this did.

Weird thing about the shape of that bass is its a little P and a little J at the same time but it growls unlike both basses. Its too bad Fender discontinued the V but you can get the IV still, it just takes some extra paperwork. Like I said before Roscoe is a friend of mine and sort of a guiding light in a different style of music than I'm used to playing.

I'd like to try a Roscoe Beck IV; I did get to play with the 5 string version but found the neck to be baseball bat-like. The passive electronics in it did sound great, though, which is why I want to check out a 4 string version.

Really Jeff? The one I had was nice and shallow from the thumb to the fingers, but nice, wide and flat otherwise. But then again, I like "wide fives".

I had the same issue with the Rick Turner RB5FL I used to have, I like thinner necks with slightly narrower string spacing than 3/4" at the bridge. I have a feeling the neck profile probably is the main issue as the Martin Keith Elfin 5 fretless bass does have 3/4" bridge spacing but a very nice profile and thinness, especially where it counts, near the body.

If I didn't have my Ricks: I have a ~90 made in Korea Squier II P-bass with a maple neck that I used to hate but now I've come to like. It's got a great growl. But I think I'd like to try a Burns Bison bass. Very unique looking. Anybody have one or have tried one?

Oh, of course...I got blinded by your first mention of the Parlor you had considered. The Larivvee nubering system makes sense...the "L" is the giveaway. And yes, used guitars are the way to go much of the time...I couldn't have afforded most of my collection without picking. HGow spendy ARE the Rick acoustics? (Sorry to stray from the topic but technically, if not for the 4003, I WOULD be playing my acoustics more!!)
