ya ... the stock pickups work good on a 4003 bass ... the vintage horseshoe and toaster look cooler ... but I prefer the sound and preformance of the stock pickups ... typically I start with all the controls set to 10 and back off the neck volume to 8 ... that gives it a good growl ... when I need a smoother, sweeter sound then I turn the neck volume to 10 ...
I bet there are a whole bunch of guys here who will line up to buy the vintage pickups from you if you aren't using them ...

I'm the guy that bought them from him. Now I'm looking for a 4001S to put the horseshoe in...
To me, the horseshoe is the gnarliest passive pickup I've ever heard. Bright, growling, and LOUD. Nothing else I've tried can get that sound.

It's true. That Horseshoe had the most brilliant punch I've ever heard in a Rickenbacker pickup. I've had 4001CS and 4001V63 basses, but that one had an extra degree or two of 'spank' to it. Just didn't fit the vibe of the bass I had it mounted in, nor the kind of music I'm playing these days. And, for that tone, I hope to one day find a nice 4001V63 in Fireglo.
I'm thinking that Horseshoe's found a good home.

Really? Cool! I haven't tried it yet, it's still in a box with the toaster. Yeah, it's found a good home for sure!

here's my newest toy ... a rather unusual 2020 bass ... it is sort of half 3001 and half 4004 ... in sort of an 80's color scheme ...

I am thinking about making it an 8 string bass or a 5 string bass

I had two V63's, one had very balanced pickups and the other one's toaster was much weaker than the horseshoe and it was the toaster not the horseshoe as I had both at the same time. The one with the balanced pickups had a great sound.

That 2030 of Jeff Rath's looks like it has the same pickups as the 4004/5Cii. I'm sure those pickups perform great in a 4 string bass.

Those pickups work great on the thinner 4004 body but on the fat massive 2030/2020 body they are a little thick sounding ... the 80's 2030 single coil pickups sound better ... as it is that 2020 has a cool nasty fat ****** off sound ... but I like the single coil bite better ... I may do a pickup swap where I put a humbucker in the neck of each of my 2000 basses and a single coil in the bridge position ...

OK stage one of its customization ... a tape job ... now do I make it a 5 or 8 string bass ...
