FretlessOnly wrote:Your mention of While My Guitar... got me to thinking, because George had stated that brining in CLapton might help smooth over the tension between them. Lo and behold, Lewisohn (The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions) indicates that Lennon played organ on the earlier unreleased version of this song (the acoustic original with other instrumentation added by the rest; only the unadorned demo has been released, to my knowledge).
Lennon played organ on the acoustic take 1 that eventually appeared on the Anthology and Love CDs. There exist bootlegs with the organ track. It was removed from the released versions. There wasn't anything wrong with what he played, it just didn't add anything to the beauty of the solo guitar and voice.

George, like John, had a tendency to see things very black & white, and overlooked a lot of the contributions the others made to his songs.

After having listened to all 96 hours of the January, 1969, Get Back sessions it becomes clear that the others did put a lot of effort into George's songs. He would play the same song over and over without making changes or offering suggestions to the others as to what they should play.

John at various times played guitar, organ, piano, and bass as they worked out All Things Must Pass, trying to help him with the arrangement. Paul spent hours working out harmonies, with George offering no feedback at all on whether he liked or disliked what they were playing and singing on his song. Up until minutes before he quit the group during these sessions they were working on his songs. When George did record All Things Must Pass the following year he used the basic arrangement that Paul & John had worked out. It should also be noted that from the first run through Ringo played nearly the exact same part he played on the album version. He learned his parts faster, and made fewer mistakes, than the other three.
