That does look like early Pete. Uh oh...early Pete and a Rickenbacker...?

John-GENTLY set the bass down at the end of your show, and CAREFULLY step away from it!

"If Townsend were a bass player......."
I thought the same exact thing before I read your post Charlie, the resemblance is almost uncanny to me.

Hey, Nate, care to share the year of manufacture of that beauty? Late '75? '76? Early '77?

April '76. I love it to death. I was gonna replace it with a 4003 but I love the slim fast neck on that one.

I like the 4001JG with black TRC and pickguard, Nate. Oddly enough...it looks really unique with the chrome and the silver-topped knobs. I would think that I had seen one like it before(its obviously not that hard to do!), but none that I remember.

Kewl. Glad I'm a first for you, Jeff. Image
Wasn't that hard to do actually. I spraypainted them both... Going to Pickguardian to get them professionally done when I get the money... Pickguard looks like leather with the paint on it. Very unique. Lat time I posted any pics of my bass it had a white guard and TRC. Much better looking to me like this. I do need to mod it some more.
New pickups or cut the .0047 cap. Not enough low end.
New tuners. A screw is missing from one of them and I'm pickey.
Hipshot bridge. My tailpiece is lifting and chipping the paint on the front of the bass. Very bad.

Besides the painted stuff and missing pick up cover everything is original. Best pruchase I've ever made. Well until I get my custom bass... then it'll be second best. Image

Nate you can buy black pickguards, black TRC's are harder to come by though.

You'll see them on ebay occasionally.
