There's one type of checkerboard, and it is usually used as decorative purfling, to be accurate. Purfling goes inside of the outer binding.

So, a Rick can have the same checkerboard purfling with either white or black outer binding, and the two different options give dramatically different appearances! I've used checkerboard purfling with tortoise outer binding, and that looks great, too, on a lighter-colored instrument like white or Mapleglo.

I understand one of the original practical (non-asthetic) purposes of purfling on a guitar was to "protect" the edges of the guitar, and to prevent any cracks running the top and bottom ( & possibly even sides)....Is this true? Thanks!

Purfling (back in the early days, 18th century) was used to tie together wooden panels and discourage splitting and shifting.

Binding--well, they don't call it that for nothing. It was used around edges for the same purpose; additionally it provided a cross-grained wood to absorb blows without the wood top, back, or sides splitting from the impact. Binding can be wood, celluloid, or plastic. Some guitars have been bound in metal, as well.

Hopefully, thin metal...otherwise one would be wearing his/her axe down by their shoelaces!

Yes, soft zinc...Saturn 63 is one example, but there were several European manufacturers who tried this.
