Did you ever see Gene Simmons lick the underside of his own chin on-stage? Unsettling at best....

In 1981, we lived in the Beverly Hills flatlands, at Doheny and Burton Way (where the Four Seasons Hotel now stands...). It was a nice, peaceful neighborhood. My ex-wife joined Simmons' workout club, the Anatomy Asylum on little Santa Monica (intriguing how our names for things can reflect our inner selves...). Simmons was a high-energy, drill-sergeant of a character who was a rabid anti-smoking crusader. My ex saw him literally toss out a few Hollywood folks for lighting up on the premises from time to time. It became too exhausting, so she enlisted in Jane Fonda's Workout instead, on Robertson. This was in Jane's pre-Ted Turner days. It was an interesting area in which to live...back then, small, quiet streets, with all sorts of intrigue and secrets hidden behind high shrubs and closed doors. The tail end of the "old days". Now, it's all Cadillac Escalades and bling.

Sounds like Simmons was ahead of his time wrt smoking. These days there are tons of people who seem to be rabidly anit-smoking. I went to see Julien Temple's Joe Strummer documentary. There's an audio clip of Strummer waxing about a campaign in support of smokers; something about just about every intersting artist, author, or musician had been a smoker. I thought it was a refreshing change, and I'm not even a smoker, though I do enjoy the occasional cigar.

Interesting to hear how Bev Hills has changed PW! Those blingy, Escalade driving BH residents must either be silly rich or else up to their eyeballs in debt!

Here are two rare basses in the restoration process: a '71 21 fretter that's been in the trenches since new, still owned by the original owner, and a nice formerly-JG 4001S from 1975:



The 21 fretter is gonna need a LOT of work, as these detail shots reveal:





The owner provided a spare fretboard, but it's a 20-fretter from the wrong (post-'73) vintage, to replace the awful ebony fretless 'board:

Finally, some shots in AFG with fresh clearcoat varnish. A few days' shrinking, flatting, one more session of clearcoating, more flatting, hand-buffing, assembly and shipping...maybe ten days-2 weeks.







Meanwhile, I've got a Ruby 4003 on the bench and several acoustics being wrapped up, too...
