bass tuna? I use a fork.

You do know there is a foam string mute, don't you?

No- I did NOT- and I just wrote a loong post and my (*&*&^*& computer lost it- so I'll re-start.

(Picks up bass-again) WHAT? there are some rubber-like things that I'm assuming if I turn the knurled knobs far enough will make contact with the strings and mute them.
Jeesh, I really am a newbie, eh???
But...my Laredo..It was so simple- I picked it up, played the bejeebers outta it, maybe rolled off the treble a bit; but now this???!!!

Now- ALbacore-
In SoCal Sportfishing, with Albacore, you either find 'em or go for a long boat ride. In this case we FOUND 'EM, and got full Mexican Limits which is 5 fish per day 2 days fishing. And to top it off this was on what's known as a "six-pack" trip with only 6 anglers- No stress, plenty of room to fish, and except for the idiot who snored louder than a buzz-saw it was awesome!!
What a frenzy when they bite, and they were nice fish, about 15-20 lbs, so 10 fish, all meat- That's a lotta tuna!
I gave some to all my neighbors (whom I liked) and even flew with some in an ice chest to Chicago to visit my Sister, who is two things:
1) A great HorseWoman who feels she could whip all those Olympic equestrians given their resources (She now lives on a Farm in Indiana, and has (2) Horses- Vern, a thoroughbred, and Cash a Tennessee Walker.
Me- I could care less about 'em.

2) She is a superb cook, who did a Yogurt based sauce one day and a Curry-based dish the next for the Albacore.
Better than sex, sorta.

But best of all, was fresh, on the boat- Sliced into cubes, and cooked right then on a George Foreman grill in the Galley-
Holy smokes- Was that ever good-

...ANd once I had sashim sliced while the Yellowfin tuna thsi time was still wiggling around...Can you say "Fresh Fish"?

So anyway-
There's a lot more where those tales came from, lemme tell ya.

The mute is useful for getting that Motown thing going. Also nice if you use the open strings a lot, like I do

A mute could be veddy interesting; as palming can get a cool thump.

It's definitely old-school. A lot of players don't like the mute. Or they don't like the teeth, really. Some would slip another pickup in that spot instead. I think that Dane has modded a few of the mute tailpieces. He could elaborate about the popular opinions better than I.

Now that little perspex tug bar below the strings on the vintage rigs. That's really old-school.

Oh Man was that fun. I simply turned the knurled knobs, and Voila! the bass becomes muted!
ANd all of that high-presence treble ringy-dingy that a Ric puts out becomes a Darrk-Deeep- throaty...muted
palmed-like THudump. Automatically!
That is so frikkin cool!
ANd here I was, lessee 2 days into this bass, well a day and a half, playing it, polishing it, fiddling with knobs, looking at it,
polishing it some more- OH SH*** did I miss a fingerprint there??
ANd the fade of the finish on the neck,,WHooooooHOooooooo.

And all the time there's a foam mute in this bridge, the like of which I have never seen, let alone re-strung thru..

ANd it takes Jeffrey! Jeffrey of all people! To casually break the news, like it's not a major epiphany or something!

WHere were the rest of you when I needed you? I thought I could DEPEND on you ! SUre, you told me about the Vintage switch, and the V-V-T-T configuration, how they apply to bridge and neck pusp, SUre- you told me :

hiya larry,regarding your fuzzy,"looks like it was taken during an earthquake" picture of your 4003-----you can still tell it's an incredible fireglo color,and the inlays on it just look awesome! the latest rics coming out are just inspiring-i really would like to check one out. also about the undiscovered features ,you did know all the new basses have GPS,right?

Sorry for the pic, try as hard as I can, it's that &*&^ camera. Plus, with it I have to recrop to post something here, photo-snapping is not my strong point.

And I am sorry for that, because Man, it is such an amazing bass, finish-wise and otherwise of course, with the DVD and Hi-Def pictures.

But seriously- The finish I notice almost tends to vary with the lighting, ranging from an almost
"pink" (perish the thought) tint; a light red, to sometimes a very dark, almost Maroon like fade.

ANd the back of the neck, there's almost a radiance in the way the colors splay out.
That and the wood, in my case, a very smooth charactered grain.

Now I saw a pic of one in the Registry that piqued my interest- a 2008 FireGlo 4003 as well, but he had GOOD pics, and the one of the back- it was almost as if it were FLAMED- I was really surprised-not subtle at all- really beautiful flame!

Does Ric do this or did he just get lucky with that piece of wood??
I mean it was a very distinct flame.

Believe me, I'm not jealous tho! How could I be??

i don't know if the factory is making an attempt to find more charactered maple,but a lot of the new cii's posted on the rickenbacker website seem to be "fancier",with the flaming,tiger-striping,etc. there are examples of some early cii's with extreme grains (paging jarrad...) ,and also the 4002 model could get VERY birds-eye-y,but as you said,i think it's a luck of the draw thing.
