Marketplace Forum Restriction For New Members
Re: Marketplace Forum Restriction For New Members
Chris: You are correct. RRF members with fewer than 30 posts will not have access to the Marketplace or the Second Strum. This includes members who may have had an account that is years old and never posted. It is all about getting to know one another before transactions are made. It also discourages people from using the RRF solely for the purpose of selling. This requirement was requested by RRF members and accordingly in now in place. Those who were members before the 30 post rule was introduced may gain entry to the Marketplace but their post will be deleted in order to be fair to all.

Some of those old threads are a nice read. Do the 30 posts have to be constructive in any form, though?wim wrote:As a nice side effect, sometimes topics from 10 years ago get bumped

Nice?wim wrote:As a nice side effect, sometimes topics from 10 years ago get bumped
I think that is annoying as heck.
I'm also starting to doubt if 30 is enough. We need to discourage people from coming onboard and dropping 30 quick-hit posts like "cool" or "nice guitar" etc etc to make their 30 posts.
Leaves a pretty bad taste in the mouth, as their introduction rot the forum.
Re: Marketplace Forum Restriction For New Members
Definitely a hard subject to address. Having a minimum number is a good thing. And yes, there have been a few who obviously posted a bunch of fairly useless posts just to get the minimum. Some were so overt that they were "sent on their way" pretty quickly, and a few who seemed like they might be pretty decent folks just disappeared after they got their magic 30 posts and found out that the marketplace isn't chock full of guitars at ridiculously low prices.
All in all, I think it's working fairly well. You're always going to get those who abuse the rules - they are usually easy to weed out. You'll always get a few who participate just enough to "get there" and then lose interest. But most of the time, people who really have an interest tend to stick around...

I think it is important to appreciate that while there is a quantitative component that determines posts to the Marketplace, there is also a qualitative one. Those whose motives may be suspect through their posts have been taken to task in the past and this will continue in the future.

Which is exactly what we want, people who come and "fill their quota" with senseless messages show us their true intentions. This is a great service for us all.
So long and thanks for all the fish!

Check out viewtopic.php?f=17&t=393053&p=698843&hi ... om#p698843 ...clever new guy found a way around it!
I tried it and was able to reproduce the results logged out.
Edited to add: but I wonder how clever someone is that puts their email address in their first post...

Thanks Jason,
I made a small but significant change to his first post.

Marketplace?! Phooey! No Super Secret Leftee Onlee Shoppe. One great looking option over the past 6 months that was sold before I even got home from work, let alone rifle through the couch for the extra coins.
Good thing I haven't quit learning from you charlatans.
Honestly, I lurked for years because this was and is the best source of information on something that interests me. And not just opinions, but the hands-on experience and real discussions of some very detail-oriented people. For instance, there are great general discussions on string tension for basses/tunings and I was able to get a specific recommendation with the right caveats for my style. I have to pay good money in my industry for stuff like that if I can't get to the answer quick myself.
Oh, and through my participation here, I was able to find someone who is going to take all of the "learning to play" out of my bass and make it pretty, again. There's no question that I am excited about it. The only way to get to this sort of information is to know someone.
And my payment for that, plus the knowledge and the openness, is participation. I HATE joining (anything), but here I am...suckers (edit if you need, but it's tongue-in-cheek). At least I made that one guy laugh.
Ironically, after all that, I guess I just want to say Thanks, for not wasting my time with that 30 post thing. Don't drop the weed-out process (but buy their stuff cheap if you can).

John, welcome.
First, I'm not sure if your post is favorable or unfavorable... maybe I'm reading too much into it?
Second, the 30 post thing is just for the marketplace. Newbies still have access to all the informational sections you benefitted from. So, again, I'm unclear on what you're getting at.

Re: Marketplace Forum Restriction For New Members
I think he's trying to say the marketplace is overrated and isn't worth the 30 posts, but at the same time he compliments on the rest of the forums' wealth of info. Just my 2 eurocents' opinion of what he means
