Maybe for a little Confluence fun,  we can try and set a World's record or a Guiness record, (or at least a record we can claim and post on You Tube) for most Rickenbacker 12-string and 6-string guitars and 4, 5 and 8 string basses joining together in unison on the Opening Chord of Hard Day's Night .... so much Ricken-chime that the sound waves will clean-out the air conditioning system at Backline....

Hmmm..... If only we could figure out what that opening chord is !!

Whoooooa. that would be a lot of fun. and certainly would spawn competitions to see who can top us. Chime-Fest 2010 begins!

Paolo
I'll bring the Showman since I don't get to use it much.
How many songs do you want for the Surf set? I submitted my list; which includes some "non-surf" instro chestnuts, and if there are others, I'll help cut down to the disired number for the list. As much as I'd like to throw in some of my oddball favorites, I think for a gathering like this that it is better to stick to the classics. Looking forward to the Minicom!

Put whatever you're interested in out there; if you have any chord charts or You tube videos, post those as well-makes it easier for guys to learn/play along. We usually don't get to everything, but I'm usually in favor of more options than fewer. :D

Early afternoon activities at the Ricken-Jam :

I have been coordinating with Paulie, our jam organizer, and with Pat and the guys from the Byrds Collective, and knowing that we have lots of RRFers who want to get a chance to play a little Byrds stuff too during the jam, here is how we are shaping up the early part of the Mini Con:

Noon to 1:30PM: Early Risers and Early Arrivers ..... warming up, loosening up with some oldies. General Ricken-jamming by all.... ride the wild surf ! :D As stuctured or as un-structured as you may want ...

1:30PM: Byrds Collective will take the stage and do a short set/performance for us. 8)

Then any Ricken Jammers who would like to Flock with the Byrds Collective will be invited to join in, for some expanded Byrds renditions with them. :D Plug in, Play along, sing along, take a solo, grab a tambourine, whatever...

Maybe around 2:10 or 2:15 --- maybe we can wrap up this segment with all Byrdaholics on hand partaking in a finale with the extended “jam” version of Eight Miles High, with the Byrds Collective. Let's see how 'hot' these Toasters and High Gains can play and maybe overheat a few Compressors in the process !! Anyone game for a little McGuinn/Coltrane inspired soloing can take turns wailing, (Kenny ?, Vito ?, Louis ?, Collin ?, Gary ?, Bob S.?, or how about some of you first-timers ?? ) .... or just play the chords, etc. ....maybe rotate in a few different Bass players in and out too, during the extended song, to get in their Eight Miles High licks too.

[Maybe a couple of Light Show model Rics would look real cool in an Eight Miles High jam finale .... capture for posterity on You Tube ? (Kenny, Collin, Danotron !) ]

Segment ends around 2:30-ish take a break (with cookies) and the regular Mini Con activities continue ...

Paulie is also coordinating with a few other band members for some possible afternoon performances .... maybe around the pizza-break time.

Sounds like a plan!
Add "Baja" by the Astronauts to the Surf set. We'll need THREE guitars!

Here are some definites:

Miselou-Dick Dale

Pipeline-The Chantays
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j09C8clJaXo (The setting of this video is TOO cool) Ex-Rick employee Brian Carman.

Re Surf's Up
Skip --- I went looking for chord charts on several of the usual web-sites for Dick Dale Miserlou last night and only found several Tabs with just the lead guitar lines.... Figuring you were going to cover those lead guitar aspects, my interest was to find the basic chord progressions. Do you have the basic background chords for a rhythm guitar accompaniment part written down ? Or, do you know a guitar chord site that will have the accompaniment chords notated ?

Rich, it's something like " E, B, C," then the change includes an "A." Just throw the tune up on youtube. It's pretty straightforward, the rhythmn just plomps along while the guitar lead takes over.

ps...I think I can arrange a lightshow. :o

Collin

Noted the Miserlou chord progressions... I'll give 'em a try. :) Thanks !! Unfortunately the two You tubes I checked out yesterday just had a staionary picture the whole time with the music ... no video of DD doing his magic. Looks like those chord progressions are sort of similar to Pipeline chords a little bit.

One Ric Light Show 8) recruited for the psychedelic 8MH jam segment  :)

Collin and Rich:

Chords for Miserlou verses are E & F-back and forth.
The bridge is Am, G, F, E-then F-E-F-E-Repeat the entire bridge sequence.
At this point, I insert two reps of the "Maleguena" E-Am Riff, then go back to the verse. Dick Dale does this live.
I like to end with one pass through "Hava Nagila", which is just E-F, but not necessary.
We always end our shows with Miserlou (unless someone offers a REALLY big tip for "one more").

I will be playing at the Coyote in Carlsbad (The Fabulous Woodies Duo) on Saturday, 4/17 from 3-5:30, Sunday, 4/25 from 2-4:30, and Sunday, 5/2 from 1-4:30 (This is the Carlsbad Street Fair and parking is a *****!). Come by and check it out. I've kinda "retired" my 330/12 since I got the Dano Doubleneck, but I'll unretire it if some of you Forum guys are coming.

I've played both guitar parts for Miserlou quite a bit; SFD used to do a version sometimes. I alwasys jut did the horn part in the middle on my guitar. It'll be fun to watch someone play it. :)

Hey everyone-here are a couple of GREAT versions of Miserlou:
First is "The King" his ownself live at the 2008 Fender NAMM Extravaganza. This was just weeks shy of him undergoing surgery (successful) for Rectal Cancer and a few months shy of his 71st birthday. BTW, he'll be 73 the Wednesday before our get-together (May 4). Still kickin' *** and takin' names!

And here's The Bobby Fuller 4:

Sunday, May 2 would be Link Wray's 81st. All hail Instro Rock!

No no, I'm not good enough to play "prog" drums, I can do some Floyd but that's it. :P
