TBH Jim, it would have looked AMAZING in FG. However I've already got a FG bass that will never leave my side (at least until I can't play anymore or there's no other option) and I wanted something different.

Damn! That is a fine looking bass!! Can't wait to see the final product. Almost a shame to do a tinted finish over that gorgeous figured maple, but I'm sure it will all pop when it's buffed out. I would not have believed you could have a transparent finish on a bass this damaged, the routing technique that retained the original checker binding was brilliant.

The maple did look great, but I'm sure this will look amazing when finished. The finish - on the samples at least - looks more subtle in real life and you don't lose the figure. As great as the figure is in the new wood, the transition between old and new wood would have been a little too obvious for me without the burst.

I actually like seeing the transition between inlay and original wood on the back, almost like wood binding, but I see your point about the burst, that really ties it all together. Are you making any changes with hardware or electronics? Given the level of restoration, I'd say this is a new instrument that owes nothing to convention. Hipshot bridge maybe?

Funny you should say that; when I started this the plan was to use a Hipshot. Then out of the blue a fellow forumite put an original aluminium tailpiece on eBay; it needed completely re-chroming but that also allowed me to have Dane route it out to allow a later (wider) bridge unit. I believe I posted pics near the start of the thread. I'd have been happy to try the Hipshot - indeed cost-wise it would have saved me a small fortune - but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get an original tailpiece.

It'll be having a Ric toaster in the neck and a Classic Amplification '60s flat-top Ric pickup in the bridge. Dane has built a vintage spec harness for it but with push/pull tone selector. Part of me wonders whether I should have tried HB1s, but hopefully I've made the right choice.

That is really stunning work. I cant wait to see it buffed out with all her jewelry on.

This is just stunning! I did a restoration on My Rick in a little worse off condition than yours though if i might say!

Nice to see someone else not afraid to repair what many told me was not possible! Still playing mine months on!

Although i must admit you have done a Beautiful job! I love the way you managed to keep the original binding and put the new cheeks inside it. Very tidy!

I followed your thread James; you did a great job! None of this woodwork or paint is down to me, it's all Larry Davis. Maybe one day I'll give it a go but certainly not with a '68!

Nice color choice. Larry does a nice blueburst. I can't wait to see how it looks and plays once you get it all together. I've been in the same boat as you, in regards to watching a huge project come together. I hope she is a player and everything goes as right as rain. When things go less than stated, it puts a damper on all the time and money invested. It also tends to crush your soul a little I wish you and your project all the best.
