Howard, I've never lived in Chicago, but my wife and I were there in 1997 for a few days. It was WONDERFUL! I don't remember where we stayed, although it was a downtown hotel, and I didn't get to look at music stores, so others will have to advise you there.

But you must visit the Chop House for good old American Steaks, and Mangiano's for the best Italian food I've ever had. Chicago was just great.

I'm surprised Ted Staberow hasn't chimed in yet, unless he doesn't know about this thread.

Well, it looks like you'll be coming in to the train station right across the river from the Sears Tower, so any downtown/loop hotels are just a couple to a few blocks away.

If you want a cool hotel and money isn't an issue, the W Hotel is on the opposite side of the downtown area, but you could cab it over.

If you're travelling light, you could just walk about 4 blocks past the Sears Tower to the Brown Line El and ride it straight to the Paulina stop, which is a long block north of the Chicago Music Exchange and, apparently, the "Ambers Hotel". Now, I can't make any claims about this hotel; it might be nice, or it might rent rooms by the hour. Or both. But here's Google's list of hotels near the CME:

A few miles from there is the Guitar Center, but bleh.

Thanks, Jesse. I appreciate the information. As it happens, last night I booked and paid for accommodation at the Essex Inn on South Michigan.

Given that I'm only going to be in Chicago for not much more than a day I might just do the downtown thing. The Sears Tower and the Hancock Building are two things that I'd like to get close to.

I'll check out some tourist info on the net and see what I find.

The closest I'm going to get to Phoenix is Santa Ana and maybe San Diego, Mike. We might be able catch up at whatever is being planned for the 75th in So Cal if you can get there, though.

Howard: I used the IP address from your posts to determine your ISP and found that our spam filters were (ahem) a bit overzealous in their coverage of APNIC (the Asia Pacific region of the Internet) . The mail servers belonging to your ISP were totally blacked out on our end. My mistake entirely. Try again and let's see if it goes through.
