The first single I ever purchased, as a naive 12 year old, was Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band. My teenage sisters were appalled, I didn't understand why.

Greg: I'm certainly appalled by that admission. Was the store all out of 'Muskrat Love'? I'm proud to say my first record purchases were 'Magical Mystery Tour', 'Sgt Pepper', and 'The White Album' at age 13 in 1974.

Well, I was appalled that the Starland Vocal Band won the Grammy for best new artist, beating The Cars!!!!!

First new one that I bought was The Move - Blackberry Way. Before that I had only bought ex-jukebox records from a second hand stall on the market. I think they cost 6d each about 4 US cents if my early morning calculating is correct.

Funny, but i cannot remember which rock'n'roll record was the first i bought... perhaps because when i got interested in music - "consciously" - it was still easier to borrow a tape from a friend & make a copy for oneself than find it in stores...
Oh well... i do remember having bought a bootleg cassette of the Doors' "Strange days" in early 90s, which was a "double record" in fact: you could hear the voice of some female pop singer all the way through the record... Oh yeah... and my Dad purchased a "native" (i.e. made "abroad") vinyl record of the Rolling Stones' "Sticky fingers", used, somewhere in 1975, and paid a lot of cash for it... He still has it!

My mistake, it was 1976, so I was only 10. My friends & I thought we were cool, we went to the record store and bought the top 4 records on the singles chart that week.
I was forbidden to go there anymore by my 16 yr old sister. She enforced it by getting a job there & getting me The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl for my 11th birthday.
Have I gained a little bit of respect back?

My first vinyl purchase was a 45 single, the Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash"...and the rest is 'his'tory...

I agree with Paul W.'s assertion that PC speech is frequently a lame attempt to assuage, in an instant, the guilt that comes with centuries of oppression, patriarchy, genocide and just plain bad behavior in general. That being said...those who experience an uncomfortable bunching of the panties whenever a 'PC' phrase is encountered may just be afficionados of direct speech, but overly-strenuous complaining about 'Political Correctness' is also the last conversational bastion for those among us who routinely cut eyeholes in their bedsheets...so choose your battles (and allies) carefully, kids...

When speaking about the oppressed, whether historically or in the present, I'll continue to employ the most respectful language I can muster...and I'm motivated in this by empathy, a more positive mental state than guilt by far. When it comes to discussing the oppressors, I'll bring out the biggest linguistic firearms I can get my hands on...

Oh yeah, and I hated The Starland Vocal Band before the damn song was over the first time I heard it...yet another hideous crime commited against our culture by their cheezball 'Producer', John 'Denver'...

Oh... and i remember my Mom's horror when i, aged 14 or 15 back then, went to the local store to buy some milk and cheeze... and came back with 2 bootleg cassettes of CCR recordings...
I'm waiting for Mousie to do the same one day...

My first record was "Smokestack Lightning" by Chester Burnett aka "Howlin' Wolf". I wore that record out from playing it so much. I don't remember what was on the other side. It doesn't matter really, I had found the sound that resonated well with me.

...yes i'm still a bit ashamed about it... as they say, "Parents will always forgive" - but we shouldn't abuse their patience. Oh well... who am i to say that?..
