I think with a 70 ( small magnet bridge pup ) mods were perhaps needed output wise, hence losing the cap, direct output and replacing the pickup for a HS.

I think this is quite possibly the explanation. I would also give JH credit for knowing the cream RM from an MG 4001.

there was also mention of a complete fretboard replacement and chris said he would have noticed that having been done !

if you're talking about the '64 cream one he's always been seen with, he bought that in '65.
