The GPS is always active, it's a tracking device so they will always know where you are.
As for the factory getting more charactered maple, John Hall eluded to that in a post somewhere. But, it's still definitely luck of the draw. My local dealer (only 800 miles away) just got a brand new 4003MG (not mine though). He said it was fairly plain as maple goes, pretty, but not really figured.

You mean so Rickenbacker factory could be watching me NOW!!!!
Wow, when I met briefly John Hall, I had a kinda vibe, but I had NO idea.....
My FG is "plain" if you will, but that is fine with me..
Subtle beauty, I was shocked to see the flame on that one I posted a link too, tho, that's pretty extreme!
I've also of course seen some very highly grained, almost quilted MG's and the Cheyenne's-
Erggghhh..
If you like good wood (and who doesn't?

)
Wow. Rickenbacker.

I thought so too--
And could you imagine, if he, like I, ordered sight unseen, and THAT came!
ALL OVER the box!!
I was talking to a dealer when considering a MG 4003, and she told me that the one they had there had a magnificnet grain, really special.
And she wasn't doing a sales-job either; not with these babies!
Almost did it, but luckily I found the FG I wanted, and luckily, the guy sold it to me!
Somethin' else!
Wait---just saw Scottypic!!
OMG!!
FREEEEEEEEDOM!
Hey, did you guys know these have a FOAM MUTE as well??!!!

I'm just hoping the Mapleglo I have on order shows up looking something like this one:

LOL!
What are ye doin' HERE Laddie??!
OK then-
About an hour layin' into the 4003, and som comments-
This time reference rig, thank you-
Neo-Pak with a very sweet cab, EA Wizzy M-Line, and I mention these to say that the Ric takes on a "personality" thru each of my dedicated rigs. AMpeg...mmmmmmm
Mesa Boogie; LMII mmmmmmmmm
This particular rig, laddies (and lass or two) is set up with a Roland GR20 bass (well, guitar, but shcrew it, you can default to bass guitar, as you must...)
Now the Ric of course is not hexaphonic, only Rick-O whatever, but I only mention this because playing like a trumpet, or a piano, or a vocal chorus as I do on my Godin is fun. SO there.
But the 4003 and it's playing thru a snappy little unit such as this.
OK- First off-
I have a LOT of basses, but have you ntoced I'm here quite often in the last couple weeks??
Why? well, a lot of reasons, some therapeutic (My Dad's leaving me, so let's keep it real here)
but mostly because well, I got two new Rics, you peeps are sure into 'em, and know lots about 'em, and frankly-
the Rickenbacker bassist is generally of a higher ilk, than say, oh maybe a Sadowsky player.
Better shut up.
Point-
I have some beauts, not Sadowsky 'cause they are overpriced, but some beauts.
Yet..
I could see playing only a Ric 4003, and that's kinda a shame, cause my others have their charms.
SO in fairness, I would like to say that IF you're gonna stick with playing your Rics. there should be some sort of handicap, because the bass is so EASY to play.
Besides being sleek, and making me appear 10 pounds lighter, and a Chick-Magnet I mean it-
I've found certain right-hand placements that alter the sound, and god darn, to get that much low-end POWER from a sleek little thing like this, and why does it feel lighter than my 4004?
Okay-
If you're gonna play your Rickenbacker basses primarily then I must suggest you do this:
Attach a 5-lb ball weight to your left and right wrists, that'll slow ya down.
Stand in a bucket of ice-cold water, that'll stop you from having so much intrinsic facility up/down the neck...
Lets see-- turn the treble OFF on your amps so you can't get that PUNCH/RING combo that I think only these basses produce that way sonically, and last but not least...
Disconnect the FOAM MUTE- they have 'em ya know....
