After a bit of reflection here is my "Top Ten list". To preface, I grew up listening to Bad Company, Black Sabbath, and Kiss. My first garage band played cover songs from all three. I was drew to Punk in the late 70's early 80's.

10. Sid Vicious (Not for ability but for attitude and stage presence)
9. John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music, Asia and a million other top notch bands this guy has true street credit!!)
8. Greg Lake (ELP twice, Crimson, Asia)
7. Chris Squire (never a big fan of Yes but Squires talent is huge)
6. Geddy Lee (same a above)
5. J.J. Burnell (The Stranglers never really gets the nod he deserves as a very talented bassist so he gets it here on my list one of my fav's growing up)
4. "Geezer" Butler (growing up, I never really gave him the credit he deserved but songs like NIB and Fairy's Wear Boots. he just wails!)
3.Tony Levin (he plays the hell out of a bass and he balances out Robert Fripp, so he has got to be good!!)
2. Chris Wolstenholme (Muse, very catchy and intricate bass riffs. I love playing his parts while listening to their CD's. Very fun to play as well as demanding)
1. Wes Claypool (Primus, not a fan of the band but his talent is undeniable! Anyone that can wail on a bass like he does deserves to be on top ten lists).
1A. Steve Harris(Iron Maiden OK, my favorite Bass player. Speed and catchy bass riffs dictates this position on my list!!)

I like and respect the following bassists and bands like Jason Neusted (Metallica), Cliff Burton (Metallica), Duff McKegan (GnR) and many others but in my opinion, many other bass players could fill there shoes and do as good a job.

This is always very hard for me. My top 5 at this point are pretty solid. The next 5 down tend to circulate depending on the mood I'm in any given week. So 1-5 is:
1: Chris Squire (Yes-RM1999)
2: Geddy Lee (Rush-4001/4080)
3: John Entwistle (The Who-RM1999/4008/4005[?])
4: Greg Lake (King Crimson/ELP-4001)
5: Jon Camp (Renaissance-4001)

The next 5 slots could be occupied by any of the following 10, in any order:

Steve Harris (Iron Maiden-No Ric)
John Wetton King Crimson/U.K./Asia-4001)
Tony Levin (King Crimson-No Ric)

Note the abundance of 70s prog, melodic, lead-oriented, pick bass guitarists. I don't think these guys are necessarily the end all be all best around, but they are my favorites and the ones that influence my style the most. Also, let it never be said that the youth have no taste, I'm going to be 21 years old come March.

Excellent taste! When I was 21 it was not uncommon to have that kind of list (because it was all current music) but nowadays I think you are a fairly rare young person. Did you have an older sibling that turned you onto "the good stuff?"

Actually I'm the eldest, and for all my trying, my little brother (a 15 yr-old guitarist) will not be swayed into the prog camp. Anyway, my dad brought me up on The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I, being the nerdy little 12 year old I was, heard Robert Plant's Tolkien inspired lyrics and devoured. Decided I wanted to be John Bonham, so I got drum lessons, and luckily enough, had a natural sense of rhythm, but no patience for rudiments. Fast forward a few years. Got really into Floyd and Sabbath and all the other standard heavy classic rock groups. Heard "Locomotive Breath" on the radio one day. Now, I always wanted to sing, but never felt I could, and my mom really got me into celtic music when I was a kid. I found that my range matched Ian's perfectly and HAD to try flute again (first try in 6th grade, failed miserably.) I got a flute and dove head first into 70s prog. Started to learn a bit of guitar (to better pay homage to my hero Ian Anderson ), in the process messed around a bit on bass, went to a Yes concert with my dad in 2008, and decided I had to become a proper bass guitarist. Chris Squire is ALMOST as big an influence in my musical life as Mr. A, who I know, is not a bassist, I should stop talking about him. So there you have it, the rest is history.

I love the arc of your musical interest as far as your playing goes. Being a multi-instrument fan myself, I feel that by knowing several instruments you will be a stonger musician in the general scheme of things. I think the flute is an underappreciated instrument. I play flutes as well...
