Jeff,
You suggested me that little monster a while back too for its 'grind' tone. I will have a GS 212 cab soon and am on the hunt for a TH 500 now !!!! In Canada, they are not as popular and harder to find !

Jeff said "you do know the flat setting is 2-10-2 and the switches off?"
Yes
Harry sent me a link to Alembic club that has a wealth of info, plus an internet search brought out several reviews, test drive documents, etc. i am going to try a mike cable next going from the front loaded output jack into the markbass' mike input for URB 's,as sOon as i can get my hands on a cable. I did find that it is pretty easy to change tones on the preamp, once you find out about its idiosyncracies.

Something I found when trying the DI out on the F-1X is that it sounded good in the PRE position (get it?

)but distorted pretty easily in the POST setting; I think the DI's transformer may be a bit undersized to handle a large signal, it may have been overloading.

Well i finally borrowed a mike cable and tried out the preamp xlr di line out. Practically nil volume going into the markbass xlr mike input, until i put my ART Phatboy pedal in the alembic's effect loop, and selected "post eq". Evidently the signal needs a boost, which the phat boy provided (it has a compressor/limiter and 3 band preamp along with the multi efx). That worked really well,in fact when i engaged the chorus or flanging effect,i have to say that it is the best that unit has ever sounded. I've hung onto that for like 20 years cuz it is good for recording direct. Ive gone back to just using the 1/4 " jacks now,as i didn't see any advantage to the xlr's. The phatboy's "growl" circuit sounds pretty nice going through the alembic, too.

It is a genuine Jolana Rubin.

Very cool. I just read up on them a bit.

Is it a decent player, or just good for wall art?

I like it better than I liked my Epi Rivoli. (The Jolana's can be had 2ndhand for about 1/3 of the price over here.) I still need to buy sadle springs though because one of them rattles. Hardware is of lesser quality than the Epi was.

Back in the 70's I ran a Sunn Model T top with two 4x12 cabs.
Now I run a Genz Benz Streamliner 900 with 2 custom built fiberglass cabs based on the fEARful design. Extremely lightweight with plenty of power.
12 sub weighs in at 22 pounds and the 12/6/1 cab weighs 28 pounds.
The 12 sub sits on the bottom while gigging but I was lazy the last time I brought it in and stacked them backwards.
Ric is a 2009 Rickenbacker 4001C64S in jetglo satin finish.

I own a Mesa Bass 400 and an 80's Gallien Krueger 800RB.
But I mostly record direct, and this is what I play through - my virtual preamp, amp, & cab:
It sounds like this(scratch tracks):

My Lo-Riders are 4 years old here - I have a "new set" I bought last year, but haven't changed them yet(kind of a testament to a Rics' presence in a mix)
Bert, that Marshall is sick
