From what I've read in this thread, the guitar wasn't playable, and now it is. A new string layout is to players preference and also, swapping the parts will help preserve the vintage parts, no harm no foul.

It is an orgy of sound. Exquisitely built. It sounds just as modern as it did fifty years ago. It's timeless.

Who's preference? Yours? George's? This is THE ONLY Rick 12-string to ever leave the factory that way. And it's the fracking FIRST RICK 12-STRING. The VERY FIRST EXAMPLE of what is one of THE quintessential electric guitars. UGH! Where's the Tylenol?

Ivan , You are correct. But he obviously refuses to grasp the truth. Nor does understand the condition the guitar was in when it went to a luthier here in San Diego. Furthermore, (it seems) he will never get no satisfaction. He keeps going back, day after day, hour after hour, from where he came from, for more of the same old~ same old~ bla bla bla.

For me, when I played it, my jaw hit the floor. I was playing THE first Rick 12 string. I could feel the history. But that was many years ago. When it was still the Arden guitar.
I'm not sure what sort of distorted mindset wants to re-write history. Where's the respect? Or is it all about mine's bigger than yours? And again I would question the website premise. It's NOT the Beatles gear. It's just SomeOtherGuysGear.com

Sadly there is no respect. It is a very sad situation that just reinforces that money doesn't buy you common sense, and that just because you have the power, doesn't mean you have the right. Yes, it is your guitar now and legally you can do whatever you want with it. I don't think I'm skewing the numbers when I say I believe the majority of people feel that when you buy something of historical significance you are signing on to be it's caretaker, to look after and respect it... to make sure nothing bad happens to it on your watch. I don't know the new owners, but to me it seems they're only interested in this guitar because with some modification they can make it closer to something played by a Beatle. It's so sad that the guitars actual significance doesn't mean a thing to them. You guys really dropped the ball on this one. You are mistreating the guitar AND it's legacy.... AND you are alienating an entire (well %98) community that might have really backed you on your venture.

I don't understand the mods to the Arden guitar either, yet it's not the Mona Lisa he's drawing a moustache on is it?
This guitar is part of the history of a privately owned company, but the company itself apparently didn't care enough about it to purchase it when it was for sale not so long ago.
And I don't think RIC could not afford to buy it back.
So please don't act all dramatical about it, I wish I could preserve a lot of things in the condition I want, but with other people's money.
That doesn't happen.
I would not alter the guitar, but then again, I wouldn't even buy it if I had the money.

On this point, I disagree but then I am somewhat of a Rickenbacker 12-string nut. If I had the money AND I knew the guitar was for sale (both huge IF's) I would have jumped at the chance to buy first Rickenbacker 12-string. Knowing its history and significance, I would have not touched it and kept it preserved in a display case for all to see and enjoy (but look don't touch!). Maybe the opportunity will present itself again in the future... (and I wonder if the mods to the Arden guitar have negatively affected its current value)

As wild in a car-crash sort of way this thread is to read, you should really re-read as a companion piece the thread in which Arden's guitar was purchased. It is laugh out loud funny when you see the various posts. Examples:
