Ronn,
Both the reissue horseshoe pickups and surrounds are original and correct timeline-wise on on the 2 CS's I mentioned. I think it's the same story with the V63 basses: early=sharp, late=round.

I belive the HS on your MMT 4001S LH is younger than that of your CS.

My question is; do each of these two styles of reissue surrounds represent a certain era in Ric history? As in, the surrounds from the early 60s were the rounded style, where the squared-off look was from the early 70s. That sort of thing, or did each style co-exist?

The 60's surrounds vary greatly so there is no one style for them. Some are longer some are more rounded. The VR suround clearly changed over the years but I don't know why. Asthetics? Probably.

Ilan: Those pieces surely are not from the same bass. Standard tailpiece but the surround is interesting.

As far as I know, no '60s 4001 or 4001S/RM1999 surrounds have the very round corners like the late '90s reissues.

I tend to think the sharper reissues are closer to the '60s originals.

as i mentioned in another thread the surround on the 63 in the smith book has got to be a re-isue it should look like teds, not that of a late v63.p.s. the suround on ebay is a 60s or a very very good copy[ someone snag it]

If the one in Smith's book is a reissue, than the pickguard must not be original also, as it follows the curve of the surround. Any body have a clue to this?

There certainly doesn't seem like there was one standard shape, so all of the above are valid!
