I too am a huge John Entwistle fan and have emulated his sound since I started playing in 1980. I also believe that in his constant quest for the ultimate tone, he started using too much distortion in his signal chain and lost his best sound which for me was when he played Alembics had had a more simplified amp setup. I special ordered an Alembic two years ago and during the course of my conversation with Susan, John's name came up. I was told he had been in discussion with Alembic to design a new bass. It's seems as though he may have wanted to go back to a previous sound. If you check out Bass Central's web site you can see what is supposed to be John's newest Alembic design, "The Dragon".

One of the things that I liked about Entwistle was that he was very good with a pick and with his fingers ...

The new amps and gadgets have input and an output volume controls called volume and gain (master), the volume controls the preamp's gain and the gain (master) controls the power amp's gain. The old amps were like radios, TV's etc. they only had what was called a volume control, this was a preamp volume and the power amp tubes got overdriven, which is why old amps sound so good, new amps with pre and master volumes overdrive the preamp tubes which gives you a thinner sound but allows you to control the volume while maintaining the same level of distortion.

That's the stuff he had when I saw him, same speakers and bass, I thought he had Trace Elliot heads though but it was probably Ashdown.
