Jeff -- No, I use both pickups and use the neck pickup as a thumbrest. So I am pulling fairly close to the neck. It is strung with standard round wound RIC strings. My teacher wants me to play with a very light touch for better speed and let the amp do the work. This may keep the brightness down. I get a much brighter sound with the 4003 playing in much the same way.

I have been trying to play with a lighter touch also, so I have my action set kind of low. Gary Willis is a big proponent of playing that way.
