I do, in fact, have the screws on my HS. So, they discharge, eh? I don't suppose that the kryptonite thing is a viable option? :^>) So what does one do to supercharge the unit?

Well...Hopefully someone with some knowledge will see this and tell you what you can do to re-charge the horseshoe magnet!

In the meantime, how about a few pics of this early v63 and/or a serial number? If you want to keep it private you could write it with an X for the last two digits, like this: G0 12XX (!) What color is it?

That serial number = September of 1968

That's not a V63, that's a '68!! It's very possible that the pickup might have discharged, I know Jeff Rath's '68 had a PU with a little less than total charge on his 'shoe.

Hi Rich, welcome home! What took you so long? This is the land of the best basses on the planet. And many of us do love Sunn. I first heard of you from the Sunn forum. You have much useful info on your site, such as the various schematics for the amps. If that is truly the S/N of your bass it is a real '68 and not a V63! I believe that Jason Lollar can recharge your magnets.

BTW, the horseshoe magnets are definitely not plastic!

It can't be. When I bought it, it still had the tags on it. Would it be a different year if the number was H1 instead of Hi? It's definately 7412. Time to get out the cam and bring in a couple of pics but I assure you, it's got to be a V-63. As long as I'm bringing in pics, would you guys like to see some of my summer vacation, too? :^>)

The hot strings around here now are Pyramid Gold flatwounds, they bring out the best of a ric, all the bottom and top you would want without the harshness of RW's, especially Rots. If you have a 68 4001 I would hesistate to put them on that however, a little high in the tension department. You might want to try TI flats, very high outout low tensions string, they sound great on an old 4001, unless it is a V63 then throw on the Pyramids
Remember RW's are for piano players.

H1 7412 makes it August '88, so that sounds better for a V63!

Well, that sounds like it fits although I'm still pinging just a bit as I was hoping that someone had screwed up and I'd finally be getting that new Corvette that I've always wanted if this was, indeed, a real 68. :^>)

So, when did Ric begin making the V-63's?

Well, I spent the last half hour figuring out how to operate the forum and read many of your posts on V63's. Thanks so much for all of the great info. Seems that late 84 was the beginning with that shipment going to Japan and early 85 would have been the beginning of U.S. shipments.

This bass has been just a peach in my life and I've always been a huge Ric fan. I've owned five Ric basses, four or five 12 strings and three of the Ric amps---the model name escapes me at the moment but they were on stands---Transonic, perhaps? After reading many of the posts that you guys have put up, I can see that I'm in good company. :^>)
