This one is an 82.
Available in Maple, and Walnut finishes with checkerboad binding, and ebony fingerboard.
I understand RIC started making them in 1977, I'm not sure what year they ended, I think 85.
I would love to know how many where made.

is the only difference in the inlays, fretboard and pup placement?

The pups are high gain humbuckers.

The 4002 entered production in 1977 and ended around '82. I don't think the production totals are known. If they are, they have not been discussed much outside of RIC. The 4002 did not sell well and remained in RIC catalogs for several years after production stopped. The body is figured maple with checkerboard/black binding. It has a 21 fret ebony fingerboard with dot inlays and black binding. The headstock has walnut wings and fine black binding. The electronics are different in that the treble pickup has two windings, one of which is wired directly to a low impedance jack. The pickup bobbins seem to have bar magnets that can be felt through the black tolex that covers the top of the assembly. The pickup cover is made of the standard chrome bezel as found on most Rick pickups, and a machined aluminum block. The entire assembly is riveted together. The 4002 came in either Walnut or Mapleglo. It has been said that one white one was made but I don't know if that is true.

the 4002 was ahead of its time ... people weren't ready for it ... I played in about 78 - 79 in a Guitar Center and tried to trade my '68 4001 for it straight up ... they declined ...

how about a 4002 re-issue for the 75th anniversary ... and a 5 string version ... with that pickup location it would make a good 5 string ... especially with hot humbuckers like the hb1 or hb2 pickups ...
