You offered some good advice, Bob. Myself, I would have just removed some plastic from where my truss rod contaced my truss rod cover and have forgotten about it. Nobody else would ever know the difference either. I would NEVER sell a good sounding and playing bass over such a small problem. I would let the truss rod stick THROUGH the truss rod cover if the bass otherwise played and sounded great, and just consider it an ID mark for my instrument if it was ever stolen. For me, sound and playing action come first and cosmetics come second or third. This particular problem wasn't even exactly cosmetic, as it would be invisible after correcting, with the truss rod cover in place.
