Welcome Chris!
A lot of us lose the PU cover. And I agree that Ricks have an unfair rep regarding their tonal range. Those who say Ricks have "no bottom" are full of **** and/or ignorant.
I flats on my 75 4001, and it has tons of bottom. But I recall the few times I used it with RW's on it I had people commenting that I had a great low end sound. So I just don't buy it that Ricks can only "sound like Ricks". Closing the tone pots removes much of that "clank" that some people find "Ricky"...
Now, I love my 4001, but recently bought a Laredo. While not as tonally diverse it suits me well, and with the more modern/strong truss rods I'll be able to sue my favorite bridge cables (Fender 9050 ML's) without worrying like I do with the 4001. Eventaully I might go back to RW's on the 4001 to have a radically different sounding bass - but the flats on the 4001 are pretty fresh, so I won't be taking them off soon.
As for feeling "intimidated" here, please don't. This is a fantastic forum, and anyone who plays can contribute what they know. There are probably a lot of folks who have benefitted from the "faker alerts" that frequently arise around here.
