John, thanks for the clarification. I find the history of Rickenbacker to be quite fascinating!

So do you think the bass in question was made by or for Ro-Pat-In/Electro, and is that a real Electro horseshoe? It looks like the one in the above photo.

My personal opinion is that the bass is a retrofit with Electro pickup, done outside of the factory.

I don't think the URB made by Ric in 36 was fretted. I saw one of those for sale on ebay last year BTW.

It wasn't. I have one here. You probably saw the one that some clown was offering for $50,000. Great for a laugh but that's what clowns do, innit?
